Silent Friend of the Many Distances, by Rainer Maria Rilke

Silent Friend of the Many Distances

Silent friend of the many distances,
feel how space expands as you breathe.
Let yourself ring from the beams
of dark belfries. Whatever consumes you   becomes stronger from the nourishment.
Be transformed, going and coming.
What experience hurts the most?
If drinking is bitter, become the wine.   Be on this night of nights the magic power
at the crossroad of your senses,
the consciousness of their strange encounter.   And when the world has forgotten you,
say to the silent earth: I flow.
To the rushing water speak: I am.
