Midwinter, by Alice Williams Brotherton

Midwinter

The sad earth cowers beneath the snow
That wraps her like a shroud,
Around the house the bleak winds go
With wailings shrill and loud.
But soft and low my heart doth sing:
"I know, I know--
After each Winter comes a Spring,
When roses blow!"   What time my soul in sadness lay
Compassed by shadows drear,
When gladness seemed so far away
And grief so near--so near;
Still soft and low my heart would sing:
"I know, I know--
That after sorrow there comes a morrow
With joy aglow."
